Can you have combined autism and ADHD?
Cherishing unique minds
ADHD and autism represent distinct forms of neurodivergence that can co-occur. While attention differences are common to both, they manifest differently - autistic individuals often show intense focus on specific interests while ADHD involves variable attention patterns across different activities. Similarly, communication styles vary - ADHD may involve active, spontaneous communication while autistic communication often reflects different social interaction patterns.
Understanding these distinct characteristics through professional assessment helps identify appropriate support strategies and accommodations. Our comprehensive diagnostic process for assessing ADHD and autism carefully evaluates these patterns through structured observations and standardised assessments, leading to personalised recommendations and support.
At Psicon, we believe that every person deserves access to and assessment and/or care that works for them. We offer online assessments UK-wide where clinically appropriate, with in-person assessments available in South East England. Some child services have age-based eligibility criteria. Contact us if you are unsure which route is suitable for you or your child.

How to get assessed for ADHD and autism
At Psicon, we offer neurodevelopmental assessments either separately or combined, depending on the needs of the individual.
A combined autism and ADHD assessment pathway begins with a single assessment, whichever profile you feel best reflects your or your child’s experiences. For example, if you identify more strongly with ADHD traits, we would typically begin with an ADHD assessment, followed by an autism assessment. Exploring each profile separately allows our clinical team to better understand how each may present and interact for the individual. This approach helps build a clearer picture of your/your child's unique neurodevelopmental profile and informs the kind of support or adjustments that may be most helpful.

Yes. Our assessments fully comply with NICE guidelines and are conducted using a highly regarded clinical model. Your teen will be seen by a specialist clinician (a paediatrician or psychiatrist) as part of the assessment, which is not always the case with private services. We are also a trusted NHS provider and frequently work with NHS Trusts and ICBs to support waiting lists. This means a diagnosis from our service is generally accepted by both the NHS and schools or colleges when supporting adjustments.

For child assessments, we ensure a doctor - paediatrician or psychiatrist - is part of the process; a standard that isn't universal across private services. With these rigorous standards in place, our assessment outcomes are readily accepted by the NHS, schools and colleges

We maintain exceptional professional standards and ensure complete adherence to NICE guidelines across our ADHD assessment process. Our reputation as a dependable assessment provider has led to established partnerships with numerous NHS Trusts and ICBs, where we help manage assessment backlogs. Our diagnostic team features specialist psychiatrists and consultant clinical psychologists with extensive experience in ADHD evaluation - a level of expertise that distinguishes us from many other providers. Because of our comprehensive assessment methodology and stringent diagnostic criteria, our evaluations and reports are consistently accepted by the NHS and schools/colleges.
Online autism assessments are suitable for many adults, particularly those who:
- are comfortable speaking over video
- would prefer to be assessed in their own environment
- want to rely on our standards but don’t live close enough to visit a clinic
For some people, this can make the process feel more natural and less pressured. If there are aspects of your presentation that would be better understood in person, we will discuss this with you so you can make an informed decision.
