Can you have combined autism and ADHD?
Cherishing unique minds
ADHD and autism represent distinct forms of neurodivergence that can co-occur. While attention differences are common to both, they manifest differently - autistic individuals often show intense focus on specific interests while ADHD involves variable attention patterns across different activities. Similarly, communication styles vary - ADHD may involve active, spontaneous communication while autistic communication often reflects different social interaction patterns.
Understanding these distinct characteristics through professional assessment helps identify appropriate support strategies and accommodations. Our comprehensive diagnostic process for assessing ADHD and autism carefully evaluates these patterns through structured observations and standardised assessments, leading to personalised recommendations and support.

How to get assessed for ADHD and autism
At Psicon, we offer neurodevelopmental assessments either separately or combined, depending on the needs of the individual.
A combined autism and ADHD assessment pathway begins with a single assessment, whichever profile you feel best reflects your or your child’s experiences. For example, if you identify more strongly with ADHD traits, we would typically begin with an ADHD assessment, followed by an autism assessment. Exploring each profile separately allows our clinical team to better understand how each may present and interact for the individual. This approach helps build a clearer picture of your/your child's unique neurodevelopmental profile and informs the kind of support or adjustments that may be most helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions
Want to know more about how we can help?
Everyone’s mind is unique. Many of us are neurodiverse. And while the neurological differences that make us individuals can bring challenges, we believe that with understanding, empathy and expert support, everyone can thrive.
Do you provide ADHD treatment with medication?
Yes, we can provide medication for those who have received an ADHD diagnosis via Psicon and are regarded as suitable for treatment. The process begins with a thorough assessment by a specialist prescriber who will:
- Discuss the benefits and risks of medication
- Conduct medical observations (blood pressure, pulse, height, and weight)
- Request routine health checks from your GP, such as an ECG and sometimes blood tests if clinically necessary,
If medication is deemed appropriate, we'll create a personalised treatment plan and provide the initial prescription. Regular review appointments are essential to:
- Monitor any side effects
- Assess symptom management
- Adjust medication type or dosage if needed
- Ensure the treatment is working effectively
Once a stable dose is reached and symptoms are well-managed, we will request your GP to refer you to your local NHS ADHD service. If you prefer to continue your treatment with Psicon you can opt to do so and we will provide you with ongoing monitoring appointments and continue to issue your prescriptions on a self-funded basis.
What is autism and ADHD combined called?
Autism and ADHD are both neurodevelopmental differences that can co-occur in the same person. There isn’t a single official name for having both, but many professionals refer to this as having co-occurring autism and ADHD, or being autistic and having ADHD. Some people also identify as AuDHD - a term used within the neurodivergent community to describe the overlap of traits from both profiles.
At Psicon, we understand that distinguishing between ADHD and autism, or recognising when they co-exist, can be complex. Our combined assessment pathway is designed to explore each profile individually so we can build a clear, accurate picture of how they may interact and affect daily life. Whether you're seeking clarity for yourself or your child, our team is here to help you better understand your unique neurodevelopmental profile and access the support that’s right for you.
How long is the waiting list?
Once we've received the pre-assessment questionnaires, we can start the rest of the assessment process. Typically, we strive to give the initial screening appointments within four to six weeks.
Will a private diagnosis be accepted by the NHS and/or my child’s school?
Our diagnostic assessments meet all NICE guidelines and follow a comprehensive clinical approach. As an established NHS provider supporting multiple Trusts and ICBs with their waiting lists, our assessment process and resulting diagnoses are widely accepted by the NHS and schools. Our assessments include consultation with a qualified doctor - either a paediatrician or psychiatrist - ensuring thorough medical oversight throughout the process.
I don't have anyone to help with the pre-assessment questionnaires, will this affect the assessment?
As part of the assessment process, we seek information about your early life experiences from someone who has known you since childhood. This aligns with DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for an autism diagnosis, which requires evidence that characteristics were present during early development.
We recognise that not everyone can find someone else to provide this historical perspective. Rest assured, while this is good to have, this won't stop your assessment from proceeding. School reports and other records can help provide insights into your earlier experiences if a long-term contact isn't available.
Can ADHD be mistaken for autism?
ADHD and autism can appear similar in observable behaviours and experiences, which is why professional assessment is important. While both conditions can affect attention and behaviour, the relationship between these characteristics is complex. For example, what appears as difficulty maintaining attention might be related to either condition, or both. Similarly, communication patterns can vary significantly among individuals.
Our comprehensive diagnostic assessment process for ADHD and autism helps distinguish between these conditions through structured observations and standardised assessments, ensuring accurate diagnosis and appropriate support recommendations.

Everyone's mind is unique. Neurodiversity is a natural human variation, and some of us are neurodivergent - our brains process information differently from what society considers typical.
